Architectural Design: Dance Machine
The project is based on viewing pedestrian traffic flow as forces that push into the site from the ground level as well as from the highline. The design proposes to connect the circulation disjuncture by creating a throughway which cuts the site into two separate programs: a formal theater and a dance school. By dividing the building into two, the path too effectively identifies different spatial boundaries and thus circulatory experiences specific to different users: performers, audience, the general public and the dance students. The building appears as seemingly two separate entities that reunite at its crowning outdoor performance green roof.
