Architectural Design: New Haven Test
The SMALL HOUSE is shaped into an almost-perfect box, generating an intimate interior space. Although compact, the owner’s unit on the first two floors offers a generous atrium space above the dining area. The procession, from living space to the bedroom, is a spatially playful experience. Each window is carefully designed to address a particular relationship to outside. The third floor has separate circulation and can become a rental unit. The house could also be easily converted into a single family house by simply opening up the interior door near the second floor north-west corner. The house sits far back on the lot, creating a very private backyard and a dynamic front yard which allows for different levels of interaction with the street and neighborhood.
