Fracture

Project Description

CASIS is an organization charged with revealing the value of NASA and space research to scientists, private enterprises, and the general public. Conceptually, CASIS acts as a force on NASA -- breaking it open – and in that fracturing allows for new connections and ways of understanding.

The idea of fracturing manifests in the building as a way of separating the different program elements. In the project, CASIS and the public visitor education component have distinct forms.

These fractured masses are then reconstituted into a unified building by introducing a connective skin that not only joins the forms, creating enclosure, but also organizes the building’s circulation. That skin serves to mediate the varying levels of privacy, from the open lower levels to the more divided upper-levels.
