The proposal features by its balance between aesthetic purity and programmatic complexity. The proposed expansion of Kielder observatory is a disc sunken into the landscape that dissolves the building’s distinctive form and objectivity.
The purity of the proposal is manifested by the inherent simplicity and weightlessness of geometrical form. The disc itself incorporates distinct programs which are adjusted to the form rather than the other way around. Inside the disc, a projected artificial sky inhabits a variety of astronomical activities and people are surrounded by such second nature. Standing underneath the disc, one reaches the highlight moment of the project where the building becomes the frame, and the horizon of the real nature dominates.
