Kunsthaus Bregenz

Project Description

This section of Kunsthaus Bregenz was chosen so as to analyze and represent the building’s novel approach to providing thermal insulation, resistance to water penetration and vapor infiltration, and use of daylight and artificial light to uniformly illuminate interior gallery spaces of the museum. A scaffolding system extends out to support an exterior skin composed of a system of overlapping frosted glass panels that shed water while simultaneously filtering light into an interstitial space that exists between the floor and ceiling of one floor and the next. The daylight is combined with artificial lighting in order to best light each floor. At night, the artificial lighting system inverts the process and light is filtered out into the city.
