Ornamental System Based on Manipulation of “Phenomenal Generator”

Project Description

The ornamental system is designed as part of the Krier Studio project which looks at traditional urbanism techniques to redevelop the Civic Center of Guatemala City. The nuclear motif or “phenomenal generator” of the ornamental system is a specific type of flower in Guatemala. Through “conventionalization”, the 3-D translation of the flower’s geometry is used as column capital. In order to prevail the motif to other decorative fields of the building without losing its figural integrity and readability, the 3-D version of the geometry is flattened with its front and side views extracted as figures for 2-D patterns. The 2-D figures are then recombined to form ornament of the dome ceiling, the arch and the banding.
