School of Architecture for Penn Design

Project Description

Emily Abruzzo

This project is about the layering of three different architectural languages to produce a productive conceptual, programmatic, and experiential feedback. The street level is a “world of poché” dedicated to excavation and specificity. This is revealed through the process of discovery. The ground level is dedicated to openness, serenity, and exchange. This is inspired by the modernist language of large, universal space and is conceived as a continuation of the campus quad. The third level is dedicated to porosity and carving. Here, the articulation of the specific character for rooms is in dialogue with their intended uses. The carving process invites light to travels through the bottom two levels.
