Our proposal seeks to create an attractor for families that will give a renewed identity to Mott Haven.
Mott Haven contains a unique and varied housing stock that is currently undervalued and primed for private investment. We believe that the addition of a significant institutional establishment in the area would stimulate redevelopment of existing housing and generate new housing. Our proposal seeks to create the Google in Education Learning Center, an attractor for families that will give a renewed identity to Mott Haven through a public-private partnership with Google in Education. The project would introduce a state of the art educational facility that combines vocational training, continuing education and after-school programs. In addition, the facility would provide professional training in computer science and software development at the high school level.
Google has already made a large financial investment into NYC by locating its North American Advertising Sales Team and some of its engineering operations in an expansive facility in Chelsea. As one of America’s most successful and innovative corporations, they feel that an investment in vocational training and continuing education with a focus on coding and software development strengthens the communities in which they operate, fosters new talent, and generates a continually renewed knowledge base. In addition to providing initial funding and brand recognition, Google has pledged long term investment through mentoring programs, computer labs, research facilities and data tracking.
We believe that the open space in Mott Haven Houses holds great potential for development opportunities and have selected it as the ideal location for the vocational center. The presence of a new institution will transform the neighborhood and would de-stigmatize the housing projects. The vocational center would be designed to provide shared facilities such as auditoriums, computer labs and research labs to the public and other charter and parochial schools in the area. These resources would also be available to students living in the area but attending schools outside of the neighborhood via after school and weekend programs. For the area’s adult population, there would be workshops and certificated vocational programs.
