Endowed by the San Francisco architect Herbert McLaughlin, Yale College class of 1956 and School of Architecture class of 1958, the Gill lecture series has a distinguished history, bringing important critics and historians to our School. Previous Gill lecturers have included Wendy Steiner, Esther de Costa Meyer, David Hickey, Charles Jencks, and Roger Connah. Kenneth Frampton has twice delivered Gill lectures. The diversity of the roster of Gill lecturers is as it should be given that Brendan Gill, Yale College 1936, was a writer with wide ranging interests, who during a long career was associated with The New Yorker magazine principally contributing drama criticism and architecture criticism – taking over The Sky Line column that had previously been Lewis Mumford’s. In Fall 2015 the Gill lecture was delivered by the philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic Peter Sloterdijk.
